Big Bands (STBB-01) Glenn Miller: A two-record box from Time Life Music.  Part of a larger “Big Bands” collection. The label STBB-01 marks its place as the first in a series of albums from the “Big Bands” series. Twenty-nine were part of this series labeled with the STBB catalog numbers.

Gaspard de la nuit by Maurice Ravel:

• Interpretation: One should not take lightly the role of the title in interpreting this work.  In the notes to the second volume of Great Pianists of the 20th Century, Bryce Morrison describes Argerich’s interpretation as a “nocturne” and a constant reminder that we are hearing “Gaspard de la nuit” as opposed to “Gaspard du jour.”^[1]Page 11 in the CD Booklet of this particular Argerich collection Agree or disagree, it is an important reminder that performers should strive to imbue Ravel’s writing with something nocturnal (secrecy, mystery, depth) as opposed to diurnal (transparent, exposed, commonplace).
• Reactions: In the notes to the second volume of Great Pianists of the 20th Century, Bryce Morrison describes the work as a “precise and decadent triptych,” an interesting critique which may be interpreted by readers in nearly as many ways as the piece itself.

Martha Argerich:

• Gaspard de la nuit recording (November 1974, Berlin, Studio Lankwitz) – A landmark recording of this particular work.
  • Analysis of Reviews: In the notes to the second volume of Great Pianists of the 20th Century, Bryce Morrison describes her conception as a “nocturne” and a constant reminder that we are hearing “Gaspard de la nuit” as opposed to “Gaspard du jour.”^[2]Page 11 in the CD Booklet of this particular Argerich collection As the concept of nocturne sparks images of subdued, clandestine tones and Argerich’s playing (to speak in a most general sense) is always marked by clear intent, this statement appears contradictory on its surface. Argerich’s confident and assured sound overlayed on Ravel’s impressionistic writing yields an almost sinister mastery of the composition.  This, I believe, is the nocturnal element Morrison is describing.

Quantitative Easing: Defined in simplistic terms as printing money to buy bonds.
