Usually when we discuss cards from 1999-2000, I complain that I cut off my collecting around that year because the number of sets became a bit too much for me. That’s still true as Skybox, in addition to their standard Premium set, produced Apex, Dominion and Impact (as well as parallel sets related to these) this year. Or I complain that my many Lamar Odom rookie cards lost value. That doesn’t apply as much with this one because the Skybox Dominion base cards were never really up there. But today is different and we’re going to talk about sweaters.
I can’t afford to do the type of collecting I often see on YouTube, but I truly do enjoy all of my cards, even common junk wax. And sometimes that means relaxing and observing collections or patterns that aren’t immediately obviously. In this card #203, the Lamar Odom rookie from 1999-2000 Skybox Dominion, Odom is wearing a sweater. Now posed shots of rookies aren’t uncommon. We’ve talked a bit about the “suit” cards, like Gary Payton’s Hoops rookie (that has a real, cool Supersonics telephone in the photo). Press conference photos are reasonably common too. But sweaters are a bit tougher but Skybox has quite a few. I grabbed the first two I found to show you a couple of others.
Let’s make sure we cover the basics about this card though. This 1999-2000 is Dominion’s debut set with 9 cards per pack and 36 packs per box. The set was an attempt at trying everything. Packaging advertised the standard parallels and Autographics as well as unconventional prizes like winning the NBA Jam 2000 video game and ten cards that allowed you to participate in a conference call with Ray Allen. Makes sense, cause Skybox was all-over-the-place exploring as the 90’s ended. This dominion replaced Skybox Thunder, Thunder replaced Skybox Z-Force. So they were having trouble sticking to anything. There are 220 cards, twenty of them rookies. The base cards have black-and-white backgrounds leaving the players to be highlighted in color. The rookies, like this Lamar Odom, are full color with the player’s name, team name and position, and set logo are in gold foil near the bottom-right corner. Much better than the silver foil of the base cards that doesn’t stand out against the black-and-white backgrounds.
The rookies have nice, succinct information on the back and we definitely see Lamar Odom’s dominance in college ball here. I always like to see reminders of this game-winning shot against Temple. I’ll put a link to that game in the description if you’re interested in watching.
But back to the sweaters! You can have a lot of fun with ideas like this. In fact, 1990-91 skybox is where Jordan appeared golfing on the back, we have a video of that card. Karl Malone has his cowboy hat riding a horse. And these casual photos continued to later Skybox as well!
Don’t overlook those common cards. And subscribe and collect with us. We’re building sets one card at a time and studying each of those cards in depth, no matter how common.
