1997-98 Stadium Club #138 Kevin Garnett

We talk about many things on this channel for each card we look at, sometimes specific details, sometimes history, like a game or great moment, sometimes we look and errors or variations of cards, and often we give context about where the card falls in its set. We might still do a little of that, but mainly, we’re going to just look at this one and enjoy. Sometimes a card just works! It looks great and that’s all we really need! And here we have a Kevin Garnett reverse slam! Stadium Club was always about focus on the photo, and that was obviously the case here with this selection. Then here’s a cool coincidence. This silver stadium club logo with the blue foil beneath…that color is the same on every single card in the set. But here, the blue/green shine when the light reflects matches perfectly with the Timberwolves colors. If you pulled this Kevin Garnett in the midst of a reverse slam with that blue/green shine and didn’t enjoy this card, you might need to reassess why you’re collecting! My favorite box break videos are when they still get excited about some of those base cards from the set. Breaks my heart a little when every base card is overlooked just to chase a few key inserts.

Just a short simple video, but let’s at least glance at the reverse of the card before we go. The design is definitely a bit busier than the front, a bit too busy for my taste. But credit to Topps for adding information to the stats to enhance them. In red, we have the player’s rank for that statistic by position. Kevin Garnett clearly stands out in blocks where he was ranked third and then first among forwards and second and first among forwards for his average. Topps also included a player’s rank for totals among all active NBA players. Garnett doesn’t rank in most categories because he was so new to the league back then. But after only two seasons, he was already solidly on the board for blocks at 46th in the league and rebounds at 98th. Remember, that was only after two seasons. He would actually end up 18th all time with 2,037 blocks.

But one more look before we go! We’re here for that reverse slam on the front and the minimal but effective design. To me, this is card represents what you want in a base card from a set.
