“Rattle and Roll” is a small ten-card insert set meant to focus on dunks. The blurbs on the back talk about a player’s ability to dunk in very generic, forgettable ways. They’re really not memorable. A better approach would have been to highlight specific dunks from specific games. Reading the Antonio McDyess blurb, it’s a lot of words to simply say he can dunk.
These cards were found every 1:12 1995-96 Topps Series II packs, but only retail packs. They’re numbered with an “R” prefix. The action photo on the front is against a metallic background with swirls of color, kind of resembling tie-die. The blue and orange on this Antonio McDyess match his Nuggets uniform reasonably well. The set name and player’s name are in yellow on the top and bottom. Topps logo in the upper-right and team logo in the lower-left corner. The backs have a close-up face shot and standard biographical info in addition to the blurb. Card number in a yellow oval at the bottom… Thank goodness this Antonio McDyess has the face shot, because the photo on the front wasn’t well chosen. He’s working hard during this hook shot and they caught him in an awkward angle. The back is much better. And concerning the photo, it’s a little odd seeing a sky hook when the cards focus so much on dunks. Only one card in the set mentions the hook shot at all, and rarely do they mention other post moves. It really is a set about the dunk.
So much potential with this set, looks exciting, but for me…I don’t dislike the cards, they’re fun, but they just come off as a a little generic.
