We’ll get to this photo and another rough one in a bit, but first an introduction to this set because today we’re adding our first 1995-96 Metal card to the video collection, the #167 Kevin Garnett rookie card. This is the first season of Metal basketball cards. The name is largely derived from the hand-engraved, metallized foil background on the front of the card. The action photo is overlayed against this. The brand logo, with season indicated, is inside a really great metallic basketball. The player’s name and the “Rookie” indication is subtle in silver foil along the bottom. The back has some cool features as well. You get another action photo and standard biographical info and informational blurb (the information leaves a bit to be desired honestly), but what is fun is the metal plate that is “screwed” to the reverse (not to mention the screws in each corner “holding the card together”). Other aspects of the design include the player’s last name in a team color and the team logo below.
But back to the photo on the front and that awkward face! It’s the one problem I can think of with this rookie card…in fact, it’s probably the second most awkward face we’ve looked at so far (the first being an Antonio McDyess Topps insert card here). Makes it a fun addition to your collection, I guess! Which one’s worse? Curious if anyone has others that are rough.
