1995-96 Fleer Total D #5 of 12 Dikembe Mutombo

Welcome to Cataloged Clutter! We enjoy collecting and spending time with junk wax, common cards, overlooked cards… No card is too common here!

We’ve never looked at a Fleer Total D card on this channel. Total D is special to us collectors who grew up in the early ’90’s. You know why… The ’92-93 Fleer Michael Jordan Total D. There was something special about that insert set that seemed to mark the moment where an early ’90’s insert set would go well-beyond the junk wax base. I never pulled that Jordan, but I remember my friend who did. He was known as “the guy who had the Jordan Total D” all year.

So Total D became a recurring set, and there was always something special about pulling one of them. Fleer skipped ’93-94, but they returned the next season. This Dikembe Mutombo is from the ’95-96 Fleer inserts. And if I had to choose a Total D card that is truly about defense, this is the one, even if it is valued like any other common card. Wait till you see the stats and information on the back. You’ll be pulling up the Mutombo highlights after the refresher. There were twelve of these inserted into Series I packs at a rate of 1:5, didn’t matter if it was retail or hobby, so they’re not that rare. They’re horizontal and the unaltered, full-bleed, game photo on the front and additional photo on the back was refreshing because the base set for ’95-96 Fleer was design chaos…a clear departure from the usual simplicity of Fleer base cards. Gold foil displays the set name and the player’s name is etched inside. Card number out of twelve is in the lower-right corner on the back, they were numbered alphabetically by last name…but this card is about one thing, defensive numbers. This summary is powerful.

Mutombo led the league in blocks for the second season in a row. But listen to this piece of info, “Mutombo collected more rejections than the entire opposing team 29 times this season. He was tied for second in defensive rebounds and, this is really interesting, he had a points/rebounds/blocks triple-double twice. Valuable, no. One of my favorite cards for substantial defensive stats, definitely!
