Fleer’s Jam Session wasn’t the only set that was taller than your average card. The 1993 Classic Futures set also added that extra 1-1/4″ to the height of the card. An action photo with everything blurred except the player reaches out to the sides, and white borders on the top and bottom with gold-foil stamping display the set name and the player’s name and position. Classic cards, with their focus on the NBA Draft and their overproduction, weren’t extremely popular, so the important thing about this set was this it was limited! Only 4,500 cases with 20 boxes each were distributed to dealers and hobby stores only. With sets like Stadium Club, Ultra and Finest appearing as premium versions of their regular sets, Classic was trying to advertise this as a premium version of the Draft Picks niche.
To advertise the 100-card set, a folder was sent to dealers with a letter describing the cards. In addition to the letter, the folder contained a small Jamal Mashburn poster, a promotional card tucked into a checklist sheet, and two more informational papers. This Isaiah Rider card was a possibility for the promo card. Make sure to view the attached YouTube video for the full experience of all of the promotional items!
