The 1993 Action Packed Hall of Fame set is one we’ve been looking at in its entirety. It’s been a nice refresher on a lot of basketball history, and the cards are really nice in terms of physical quality. If you’ve been following along, we now have videos of the first 23 cards in this set. I’m excited to add this Slater Martin card because there’s just not that many cards that feature him. When he was playing for Minneapolis Lakers, he was overshadowed by George Mikan, and being drafted in 1949, he just missed the cut for having a 1948 Bowman card. He won four championships on that team though. Moving into the ’50’s…his fifth championship was with the St. Louis Hawks in 1958, but he was overshadowed by Bob Pettit there, although there is a ’57-58 Topps card of him.
But Texas Longhorn fans don’t feel like he was overshadowed. Texas Longhorn fans know Slater Martin. The first bullet point on the reverse of this card mentions his college career, but it fails to mention that he is still tied for the record for most points in a Longhorns game with 49. He’s also one of only three Longhorns to have his number retired along with T. J. Ford and Kevin Durant, hence the title of this video. This set was in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Hall of Fame, so on nearly every card, the final bullet point is reserved for that player’s year of induction into the Hall of Fame. Slater Martin is the only Longhorn to be inducted and that was in 1981. So Longhorns fans, make sure this Slater Martin is in your collection!
