If you’re just joining us, today we complete the five-card Larry Bird subset from the 1993 Action Packed Hall of Fame set. We have videos on every card. It’s an odd subset, since the set is entirely dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of the Basketball Hall of Fame and Larry Bird was not in there when the set was produced. These are the only five cards in the set where that happens. It’s been nice to revisit Bird’s career and this card sums things up nicely. Really nice closing card… Let’s start with him being the 5th player in NBA history with 20,000 points, 5,000 rebounds and 5,000 assists at the time of printing. The other four were Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, John Havlicek and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Today, less than twenty players have reached these landmarks, but they range from players as diverse as Michael Jordan, Gary Payton and James Harden.
At Cataloged Clutter, we love when specific moments are mentioned and I try to provide you with links so you can go back and enjoy those moments. We have a great one here. The back of this card sums it up nicely. The link to the moment is here. And the action doesn’t end there. After mentioning that Larry Bird ended his career with 59 triple doubles, the card highlights his final, and one of the most exciting, in a game against Portland in 1992. The ending is more exciting than the card lets on. They mention a last-second three pointer that sent the game into overtime. But the Celtics were actually down by five with about 12 seconds left. Bird hit a layup around the ten-second mark along with that three pointer in that short amount of time! Here’s a link to the game here. Even if you typically don’t follow my links, I promise, this one is worth the time. Very exciting game! It’s these types of memories that are why I spend time with “common” cards. Finally, since these five cards cover so much of Bird’s career, it’s nice to close with a mention of his being on the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics, a powerful close to a legendary playing career.
I hope you enjoyed this look at this Larry Bird subset. Quick review…we have this nice introductory card, a card dedicated entirely to his college career, a card dedicated to his three consecutive MVPs, a feat shared by only two other players, a fourth card that fleshes out earlier information, and this closing card. These cards are very affordable, especially if a whole set is purchased. If you’d like to look at more, we now have videos for the first ten cards, a subset called “One on One,” the next six coach cards, and these five Larry Bird cards.
Subscribe and collect with us! We’re making videos of every card we can, one individual card at a time. It’s something a bit different from the usual big-money investing or box breaks.
