1993 Action Packed Hall of Fame #20 Larry Bird, “A Celtics’ Tradition”

We’ve been enjoying the Larry Bird subset from 1993 Action Packed Hall of Fame and today, we’re adding the fourth card of this five-card subset. It’s the weakest in terms of having a clear theme. The first card, #17 in the set, was clearly a point-by-point career overview, and in that video, we mentioned that these five Larry Bird cards are the only cards in this Hall of Fame set where the person wasn’t actually in the Hall of Fame at the time the set was printed. The second card focuses on Bird’s college years. The third card, briefly mentioning his rookie year, is all about Bird’s historic three MVPs in a row, something only Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain share. This fourth card, #20, basically fleshes out earlier information instead of presenting a new theme. It’s also the only card in the subset where the gold-foil jersey is on the bottom, just in case you were curious… That jersey is a great logo for this subset because 1993, the year of this set, is the year the Celtics retired Bird’s number.

Let me point out a few things that make this card a great addition to a collection. I like when specific moments are mentioned. This 91-90 Celtics win over Dr. J and the 76ers, that was game seven of the Eastern Conference finals, is an exciting memory. It’s worth reliving at least the highlights, in addition to Bird finishing strong right before the last minute, you get a brawl that almost started at the end of the third quarter…I’ll put a link in the description for you! If anything, you’ll be reminded just how physical basketball was in the ’80’s. Even after the game it was physical as crowd rushes onto the court! Another interesting fact, in 1984, he set a record for most points in a single playoffs with 632. A lot of people would top this in the future, but I think Bird is still in the top 20 with this number. And the card closes with some Celtics history where Bird’s third MVP lines up with the Celtics franchise’s 16th NBA title.

Overall, the card is a bit all over the place with info, but it’s good info. Hope you enjoyed a brief look at this card. I’m sure we’ll complete this particular subset soon…
