We just started looking at the 1993 Action Packed Hall of Fame basketball card set. It’s hard to find a better set for the price. The cards are on a different level in terms of quality with their own unique patent number seen on the back. Thick stock, embossed, glossy and matte finishes, full of great Hall-of-Famers and loaded with historical information. But because it’s overlooked, complete sets can be found for under $20 if you look hard enough.
This set starts with a really interesting subset called “One on One,” a set that features pairs of players considered great matchups. Because we looked at the #1 Walt Frazier from this set, I wanted to discuss the other half of this pair, Jerry West, card #2. The matchups in the “One on One” subset that belong together have the same color in the subset logo. Walt Frazier versus Jerry West is a great pairing. Especially since they matched up with each other in the 1970 NBA Finals. Although Jerry West’s numbers come out on top in many ways, Frazier has that championship against West. The players met again in the 1972 Finals with the Lakers coming out ahead this time for the championship. To make matters more confusing, in 1970 when the Knicks won, Jerry West was the scoring leader for the playoffs. In 1972 when the Lakers won, Walt Frazier was the playoff scoring leader with the Knicks. And finally, again, in 1973, the players faced off again in the Finals. The Knicks won, and Jerry West was again the playoff scoring leader.
We won’t get into other details, or make any conclusive statements…. We just want to point out that the “One on One” subset pairing players up with competitors is a neat idea, and, based on the history of these two players, this set really started off with a great pairing.
