1993-94 Topps

1993-94 Topps, in some ways, felt like a second season for Topps. After 1981-82, they took a ten-year break from the hobby, not coming back until ’92-93, so that set definitely felt like a premiere. So ’93-94 feels like a “second year in a row” from Topps. It resembled ’92-93 in many ways. The number of cards stayed the same, with two series of 198 cards each. The order was still chaotic, with players scattered everywhere throughout the set instead of being grouped by team. And like the previous year, factory sets continued to be produced.

Among the many randomly-numbered cards of players, there were some noteworthy, and sometimes quite thoughtful subsets. Like ’92-93, the set begins with some highlights cards capturing key moments from the previous season (except that the ’92-93 set has a regular Larry Bird player card as #1…I guess they didn’t want to start the set off immediately with a subset for their big return?).

Topps also kept their “50 Point Club” subset. In 1993-94, instead of grouping these cards, Topps scattered them throughout Series I. But they thoughtfully placed the first card in the subset, a Nick Anderson, as card #50. But this season, not many players had 50-point games, so there are only four cards. In ’92-93 Topps, there are a lot more of these cards taking up #199-215.

Another important subset, the “Future Playoff MVP” cards, are grouped together at the start of Series II. These are not-to-be-missed and very thoughtful as well. They begin with a Michael Jordan card titled “Topps Reigning Playoff MVP” where he is artistically pictured with his back to the viewer. This is a great choice because everyone knew he would be retiring this season.
