Hoops was always about having fun with a large variety of cards for a reasonable price. None of the inserts in 1993-94 Hoops were particularly hard to obtain, but value aside, there were some fun ideas. This 1993-94 Hoops Face to Face insert set is simple and enjoyable. There were twelve different cards within Series I packs and the idea was to propose matchups between ’92-93 rookies and more established NBA veterans. So there’s two players per card, the ’92-93 rookie on the front and the veteran on the back.
The cards are simple, but to their detriment in my opinion. Even a few sentences explaining why the matchup was chosen, or comparisons to observe in the future, would be really useful. But we have two photos and barely anything else.
This is probably the least valuable card in the set. But it’s a great card to examine because, in hindsight, sometimes these types of comparisons fail. Can anyone out there make an argument that Todd Day should be compared to Chris Mullin now that their careers have played out? I don’t have anything… But that’s part of the fun of looking at old commons. Some cards become legendary while others make you think, “Well, that idea didn’t really pan out!” And this is one of those situations. You win some, you lose some. And the Todd Day/Chris Mullin comparison just didn’t take off. But it’s still a fun idea for an insert set.
