1992-93 Upper Deck Wilt Chamberlain Basketball Heroes #12, 1960 NBA Rookie of the Year

I really enjoy this set! I know it’s not very valuable, but imagine being a kid in the early ’90’s and pulling a Wilt Chamberlain card. The set was really exciting for us youngsters and it allowed us a chance to explore quite a bit of history too.

Where to Find Them: Upper Deck distributed their 1992-93 cards in what were called a “Low Series,” which contained cards #1-310 and a “High Series,” which contained cards #1-510 with a few of the cards differing. But the insert cards differed depending on the series as well. These Wilt Chamberlain cards were found in Low Series packs. If you weren’t sure, the bottom of the Low Series boxes actually featured a large image of one of these Wilt Chamberlain cards. The odds of finding a Wilt Chamberlain Heroes card stated on these boxes is 1 in every 9 packs. Odds were the same for jumbo packs, and these cards could be found there too. Finally, if you recall, the Series I/Low Series jumbo packs were also found in “Locker Boxes.” These boxes contained four 27-card jumbo packs and could be used as a plastic storage container for your cards. So these were all the places you could locate Wilt Chamberlain Basketball Heroes cards.

There are ten of these Wilt Chamberlain cards if you include an unnumbered header card as well. The backs are loaded with information that covers a large span of his basketball career, from college to induction into the Hall of Fame. It’s important to address the numbering on these cards. The complete Wilt Chamberlain set is numbered 10-18 because Upper Deck was viewing all of the Basketball Heroes cards as an ongoing collection. The previous year, ’91-92, Upper Deck produced the Jerry West Heroes cards which were numbered 1-9. The “Basketball Heroes” logo is the same on all of the cards from this ongoing collection.

We frequently point out important or interesting information on the reverse of cards, but this card highlighting Wilt Chamberlain’s rookie year is amazing! That rookie season was so outstanding, it’s worth reading the entire back. The league clearly was not prepared for an athlete like this and it was immediately obvious that records were about to be shattered!
