1991-92 Skybox is one of the largest basketball card sets ever at 659 cards. This was due to an enormous number of subsets. Many of these are forgettable, unfortunately. The “Small School Sensations” and “Skybox Salutes” aren’t exactly must-haves. But if there is one subset from ’91-92 Skybox that collectors want to make sure to obtain, it’s the USA Basketball subset, particularly the ten cards featuring the 1992 Olympics Dream Team.
The Dream Team’s inclusion in the ’92 Olympics was unforgettable for those of us who watched it! And the momentum surrounding this team transferred to any Dream Team cards. The #534 Michael Jordan card is arguably a situation where a subset card is even more sought after than the Jordan base card. In fact, even into the early 2000’s some price guides were listing this #534 Jordan at around $10 in value verses about $4 for the #39 base card. And with the huge number of cards in this set, many collectors were more concerned about making sure the USA Dream Team was complete more so than completing the whole ’91-92 Skybox set. The computerized, 3D backgrounds in this subset displayed different variations on the stars and stripes theme. And although attractive, there’s not very much on the reverse, just a couple of USA Basketball Team logos, a close-up of the picture used for the front, just without the computerized background, and a brief quote from the player.
There aren’t many Dream Team cards out there. So although ’91-92 Skybox is often overlooked, these cards are a must-have!
