In late August of 1991, Fleer released their sixth consecutive set since the 1986-87 cards. 1991-92 was probably the most significant design change yet. This was a departure from the centered photo surrounded by a border. Instead, off-center to the left, there was a small strip of dark blue imprinted with NBA logos that Fleer used for informational purposes (team logo, player name, position, subset). The photo shifted to the right and made up the majority of the card. The reverse was in full color, a first for Fleer! The hardwood background is great. And having not only a headshot, but a small action shot too was a great touch! The 1991-92 Fleer set was part of the wave of “more=better” in basketball cards. The set was expanded with 240 cards in Series I and another 160 in an “Update” set, for a total of 400 cards. Like NBA Hoops had been doing, All-Star and Coach subsets were included (with coaches now placed in their respective team), but Fleer also included a subset of Slam Dunk participants. Not only was the number of cards in the set growing larger, the number being printed was staying excessively high as well. We are still in the “junk wax” era here, and the cards have limited value due to overproduction.
