You can’t fully understand this card without reading… This link about the 1990-91 Fleer set as a whole.
Today’ we’re returning to 1990-91 Fleer, a nice standard, compact set of 198 cards organized by team and last name with two checklists at the end. We’re right around the middle of the set, card #101, at the middle of the alphabet with the Miami Heat, and specifically, the Glen Rice Rookie card. Although overlooked today, the 1990-91 Fleer set was quite popular when it was released, and this is one of the important rookies that contributed to that initial popularity.
Do you see the difference between the cards yet? Junk sets, as overproduced cards are affectionately called, are known for errors, variations and inconsistencies. From this set, we’ve already done a post on the Michael Jordan “no line” variation, one card has a black line above the statistics, one doesn’t. We also pointed out that the Tim Hardaway rookie from this set has an incorrect birthday. Well, this Glen Rice rookie exists in two variations, and the difference lies in the Miami Heat logo in the upper-left. On one, the flame stops before it goes above the rim of the hoop. On another, the flame continues. This latter one is harder to find in my opinion, but neither are particularly rare or valuable. But the card is a great reminder to not skim over 1990-91 Fleer too quickly. The set is full of quirks that add more complexity than meets the eye!
