You can’t fully understand this card without reading… This link about the 1970-71 ABA All-Star 5×7 Picture Pack set as a whole!
The #1 Rick Barry is the highlight of the 1970-71 ABA All-Star 5×7 Picture Pack set. The 2001 Standard Catalog of Sports Cards lists the price at $15 while all the other cards of the set are listed at $5. Prices are variable because you’ll have a hard time locating this set, much less locating individual cards. The photo on the card, eyes gazing upwards calmly preparing for a shot, was used for other Rick Barry photos and memorabilia, so you may recognize it from elsewhere.
Also of note is the team name at the bottom…”New York Nets.” There weren’t very many years that this was a valid team name. The team started in the ABA in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans before moving to Long Island and changing the name to the New York Nets in 1968. The name was chosen because it rhymed with the Mets and the Jets. The team merged into the NBA in 1976 and shortly after, moved to New Jersey becoming the New Jersey Nets in 1977. In 2012, the team moved to Barclays Center where they still play as the Brooklyn Nets. Lots of history in that simple team name!
In Short: This is a rare set of ABA “cards” that I only call cards because they’re found in some price guides. They’re actually just 5×7 pieces of paper. The 1970-71 ABA All-Star Picture Pack is a bit off-the-beaten-path. But it starts off strong with this Rick Barry photo, a picture that was used for a variety of memorabilia. Also nice to see a New York Nets card, that was 1968-1977 when the team was in Long Island. We look at this card and this entire set at Cataloged Clutter. Subscribe and join us!
