1993-94 Topps #50 Nick Anderson, 50 Point Club

This is one of those videos where, if you don’t want to look at the card, you can jump to the links in the description and re-live this game! The Nick Anderson highlights are in the first link, but there’s a not-to-be missed moment that you have to use the second, full-game highlights to see. We’re going to talk about these 50 Point Club Cards, we’re going to remember this Nick Anderson game, and we’re going to talk about an exciting moment that this card fails to mention.

Topps was very thoughtful in small ways, even during this junk wax era. This is the second ’93-94 Topps we’ve looked at. We have a video on the #199 Michael Jordan Reigning Playoff MVP card that discusses why he’s facing backwards on the card, spoiler alert…remember, this is a ’93-94 set. So feel free to search for that video if you’re curious. Like the backwards-facing photo, Topps had some thoughtful ideas and one is on this card. They waited until card #50 to introduce their 50 Point Club subset. Simple thing, but appreciated.

Topps had a 50 Point Club subset in their previous ’92-93 set and it was more successful in some ways. In ’92-93, the cards were grouped together at the start of Series II. These early ’90’s Topps sets can feel a bit chaotic because the players aren’t grouped by team and alphabetized, they are scattered throughout the set. So it’s nice if the subsets are grouped. But this year, the 50 Point Club cards are scattered in Series I. And in ’92-93, there were lots of them, cards #199-215! This year, there are only four of them. Great that Topps didn’t give up on this idea, but there just weren’t that many 50-point games the previous season.

Onto this Nick Anderson card, This is Magic vs. Nets in April 1993. Let’s read the back. The jump shot with 37 seconds left ends the shorter highlight video in the description. Very exciting, physical end to the game. One thing to note, his 12-12 free throws. Miss one of those, and this card doesn’t exist. Miss two and this game goes into overtime. But there was another memorable moment that I’m surprised this card doesn’t at least reference. Shaq pulls down the basketball hoop in this game! I understand we don’t want to take away from Nick Anderson’s performance, but come on, that was a noteworthy moment. If you want to see that, use the second link in the description and start at about 14:30.

Really fun card, great game to remember!
